Wooden Model Builder

Wooden Model Builder

Jim Pike visited the home of Kevin Sculthorpe a clever woodworker, who creates wooden model planes, trains and automobiles as well as boats, spinning wheels and merry-go-rounds. Kevin started woodworking as a hobby about 20 years ago.

The models are worked from simple sketches with no detailed plans or designs. Many of the models are highly detailed for example an old-style fire truck has wheels that can be turned by the steering wheel while the flick of a lever can position a canon at the side of a model pirate ship.

Techniques

Kevin uses radiata pine because it is easy to work. He has developed special apparatus to help his model making. To make wheels for wagons and merry-go-rounds he cuts the circular wheel shape from a square piece of wood using a jigsaw. To do this he attaches the piece of wood exactly through its centre to allow it to rotate. This is positioned beside the jigsaw which is then used to cut off the corners of the square. By rotating the timber and constantly removing the corners Kevin ends up with a perfect circle.

The models take between three days to four weeks to make depending on the size and detail required for each piece.
