Don’s Tips: Wooden Decking

Wooden Decking

Wooden Decking

The great thing about living in Australia is the warm climate that allows us to live, eat and entertain outdoors.

A great BBQ & entertaining area is more or less essential for most families these days.

Decking & patios are so very useful at the back of the house. I adore modern decking, but a few words of wisdom (& caution).

Well constructed timber decking usually lasts over 20 years, but untreated timber such as hardwoods, may only last about 10 years or so. Use ant capping on all posts and inspect all wooden decking at least once a year. And don’t forget annual treatment with preservatives.

In many cases, concrete pavers or brick pavers are a better choice since they don’t rot and will last indefinitely: this is especially true in bush fire prone areas.

Timber is beautiful, but it must be maintained well or it may rot and suffer from termite attacks. Even painted timber may rot and become unsafe.

Plan your decks well!
