Hi Louise, “Three bricks high” doesn’t help me to help you much. Please send me more details such as the interior dimensions of the planter box: interior width, depth and height. Hydrangeas make great pot plants but they need luxurious watering. Maybe a mini watering system is the go? Don.

  2. Don’s Expert Answers: Dear Sir / Madam, May I ask a question about a Lillypilly please? Understand my tree is called the Common Lillypilly: it has dark glossy green leaves and and abundance of pink, cherry sized berries, much loved by birds. It is nearly twice as high above the roofline, gives good summer shade to the garage. When my parents planted it about 40 or 50 years ago they may have thought it would remain a bush rather than become a massive tree. It is planted directly beside the concrete pathway and directly beside (about 3 feet away from) the garage brick wall. Issue symptoms: The concrete path has been slightly lifted in part by the roots. Further along on the same wall axis (kitchen wall) there are some small ‘staircase’ cracks in the brick work. A builder said the staircase cracks were not a big issue, possibly I can just measure or mortar this. The builder said the tree was massive and would not grow further. The neighbours garage wall has a small crack also, and he has ‘mentioned’ that his garage door does not shut as well as it might. My question: Has the tree reached its maximum growth and stopped growing? Your reply would be greatly appreciated, Regards Jenny Macpherson
  3. Don’s Expert Answers: I want to espalier a Camellia sasanqua ‘Something Special’ along a south east facing brick wall, the wall is 8 mts long and 1.5 mts high. There is a garden bed (40 cm wide) in front of the wall which is edged with cement and stone. There are Agapanthas growing in the bed which i want to remove and plant the Camellia to be trained along the wall. I am worried that the bed may not be wide enough for the Camellia’s root system. I do not want to remove the edging.

Don’s Expert Answers: I am led to believe that the daintree pine can grow anywhere from 4 to 7 metres high, i have planted it in the corner of my garden as a christmas tree and it is only about 4 metres away from my house. I am just wondering if the root systems from these pines cause issues with house slabs , do they have big root systems that cause problems . I also would like to know if these pines also look scraggly and older dead foliage sits on the bottom of the pine lilke most pines. Thankyou so much . shaz
