Answer: Hi Ros, When you choose to grow plants out of their preferred climate, things often go wrong. At best their performance is erratic – that is, some plants do OK but others don’t. Bananas prefer Coff’s Harbour and areas north of it. Singleton is well south of Coff’s and is inland 60 km or so, rather than on the coast which bananas prefer. So your plant is struggling and slow to fruit. This is normal for your area. Selecting a very warm position in your garden which is in front of a north to north-western facing masonry wall will help speed things along. This parallels the situation of people growing Citrus trees in Melbourne. Citrus find Melbourne rather too cold, so their performance there is sometimes problematic: the warmer the position however, the better they do. Don
