Don’s Tips: Decking

Decking

Are you contemplating putting in a deck around your house?  Well then, let’s look at decking.

If you put in a wooden deck, normally it will last about 10-15 years, after which time it may need expensive serious maintenance or replacement.

If, on the other hand, you put in a masonry deck such as concrete, various types of pavers or even stone, then it will last almost indefinitely.

If you do elect to go for a timber deck, use either ACQ treated pine or very thick hardwood: i.e. at least 30mm thick.  Then you must oil your deck at least once a year.  This will help to preserve it.

Protecting your wooden deck from rain with a roof is also an excellent idea.  Dry timber lasts much longer, and under a roof is more pleasant for you and your friends as well.

Plan before you build your deck.
