Ugly shadehouses – shadehouses don’t need to be ugly!

Do you remember the ugly shade houses that used to exist in old-fashioned gardens?  Made of wooden slats to house the orchid collection and some ferns & hoyas.

Mercifully they are long gone from most gardens.  But you can still create wonderful areas for plant collections if you want to.

Some plant collectors erect a blue board garden screen behind which they construct shelving to put their bonsai pots, hoyas, succulents or whatever.  The screen can be painted an attractive colour and it can also hide the compost heat & garbage bins.

Plants can also be placed on shelves attached to fences or the house itself.  In all of these cases, the plant collection becomes an ornamental feature of the garden.  No longer is it an eyesore.

–   So put some thought into housing your collections of plants.
