Moroccan Style House
When it comes to innovative house design in Australia, tropical areas seem to be leading the way. The design of the north Queensland home of Franca and Danny Obersky takes advantage of fabulous views over Trinity Bay towards Green Island. Danny and Franca have always thought that the Mediterranean style of living suits the tropical climate of northern Australia, and so their home opens onto a central courtyard and pool. Franca, who was born in Venice, has worked as an interior decorator. She sat down with a colour chart and courageously chose a riot of vibrant paint colours for the house. She loves the result, because it never fails to lift her mood and cheer her up after a long, hard day at work.
Moroccan influence
White pavilion tents give a Moroccan feel, as well as shading the courtyard and reflecting light back into the house. The tents are made of new age vinyl on steel frames, and have already withstood several cyclones. Brilliant colours have been used throughout the house. Tropical climate features are also incorporated into the design, with wide verandahs, high ceilings, natural light, breezeways and the use of terracotta tiles. Danny favours rendered walls because they give a cool feeling and are low maintenance. A mosaic water fountain by local artist Nori Lindsay, handmade terracotta lanterns and many colourful rugs and artifacts all make this an exciting place to live.
