Sick Grapefruit Shedding Bark

Nature of problem: 
My trees-Orange and Grapfruit got sick: the branches are loosing the bark and become hollow inside. it had never happenned before

 

Type of Plant (if known): 
Grapefruit tree and Orange tree

Grapefruit tree appears to suffer badly. worse than the orange tree. But grapefruits are just perfect – big, juicy …

 

Soil Type (e.g. sandy, clay or loam) OR Potting Mix Type: 
Loam and compost

 

How often do you water the plant:
usually only rain

 

How many hours of sunlight does the plant get each day:
6-7

 

What type of plant is it:
Citrus trees: Grapefruit and orange

 

How long since you planted it:
The trees are quite old. THey’ve been there since I bought the house 17 years ago.

 

Have you fertilised? If so, with what and when:
once, 3 years ago

 

Is the plant indoors or outdoors: 
outdoors

 

Is the plant in a pot or in the ground: 
In the ground

 

What other treatments have you given the plant: 
Bunnings advice to cut it down. for the grapefruit it means to cut the entire tree, because there are fungus like spots on the tunk (photo attached)

Answer: Hi Sohia,  Bunnings are right, the trees are just old and dying – remove all of them. Citrus are grafted plants and usually die around 15 years of age due to Graft incompatibility. Buy some new ones.  Don
