Don’s Tips: Goldfish

Goldfish

Last time we looked at putting in a garden fish pond. Now we are going to look at goldfish.

These are the best pond fish of all. Koi carp get too big and need expensive filtration systems.

The long-bodied, single-tailed goldfish are best as they are very hardy and soon grow too big for herons and kookaburras to eat.

The fancier double-tailed varieties are more for aquariums or for ponds covered in wire mesh.

Over-feeding gold fish can pollute the water and kill the fish – so go easy on it.

Water lilies provide shelter and protection from birds that might eat your fish, but rock tunnels or ledges or even pipe sections are also good life-savers.

Think about goldfish – they are a great addition to any pond and they eat baby mozzies too.

Hooroo! Don.
