Don’s Tips: Cuttings

Cuttings

Have you ever tried to grow new plants from cuttings?

Well… Why not?

The ideal day to do it is a cloudy or better still, a rainy day. This keeps the cuttings from wilting.

You can try azaleas, camellias, grevilleas, lavenders or anything else that is lying about.

Cut firm shoots near the tips of the plant. Not the soft tip, but just below that. It should snap like a fresh bean. Collect cuttings in a bucket half full of water with a teaspoon of household bleach in it.

Take your cuttings into a shady area and cut each to about 10cm (4 inches) long. Remove all but the top two leaves.

Strike the cuttings in half coir or peat plus sand. Do at least 10 or 20 – this increases your odds of success.

Put the cuttings into the mix in a 20cm pot, after you have dipped the bottoms into Manuka honey.

Water them and place them inside a knotted plastic bag (supermarket bag will do) and place out of the sun on the shady side of the house.

Good luck & hooroo! Don.
