Last year we filmed Dianne and Sam Chi’s garden, which featured a huge sculpture of a dragon. A Burke’s Backyard viewer, Anthony Williams, saw the story and suggested we visit Templex Nursery in Brisbane, where there are hundreds of sculptures, including 7 dragons!

All the sculptures were created by nursery proprietor, Tony Wong, so that the nursery would be a happy place for families to come and enjoy themselves. There are four large dragons, three small dragons, two gigantic heads, three huge Buddhas and a monument to September 11. The sculptures are mostly made from concrete, sandstone and recycled products, and they incorporate water whenever possible.

Tony and his wife, Gemma, have been at the nursery for 14 years. They stock lots of rare fruit trees, as well as beautifully scented plants, such as magnolias, michelias and osmanthus. This range of plants is particularly popular with their many Chinese customers.

Tony is a keen breeder of fish and green tree frogs, which can be seen in their thousands in the nursery ponds over summer.
