Magazine Inspired Garden

The design of Sherrie and Nathan Fawle's garden was based on an article they read in the October 2001 edition of the Burke's Backyard Magazine. Their garden is still under construction, but stage one, the courtyard area, is complete. The result is spectacular, with tropical-style plantings, vibrant colours and a large entertaining area with plenty of seating for visitors.

Design features

The use of colour in the courtyard is very striking and adventurous. The boundary wall is painted bright pink (Dulux 'Scarlet Ribbons'). Planter boxes painted in blue (Dulux 'Calico') surround the paved area, with blue and cream built-in benches. As a finishing touch, Sherrie plans to put some brightly coloured cushions on the bench seats. The Fawles chose an earthy, neutral colour for the pavers, so they don't compete with the other colours or reflect too much heat and glare during summer. The courtyard is very spacious - there is ample room both for entertaining and for baby Hannah to run around and play. An outdoor setting is perfect for alfresco dining, with the benches providing additional seating for guests. Golden cane palms (Dypsis lutescens) are underplanted with colourful foliage plants such as crotons (Codiaeum variegatum cv) and cordylines, giving the area a happy, tropical feel.

Dulux 'Calico' and 'Scarlet Ribbons' paint costs around $84.00 for 4 litres.

The pavers were UrbanStone 'Bluestone' in a sawcut texture.

The total cost of the courtyard renovation was $15,000. This figure includes the cost of the paving ($4000 for 50 sq.m).

Plants cost $1200 (including $150 each for mature golden cane palms).
