A popular myth among champagne drinkers is that if you open a bottle of bubbly and don't finish it, you can stop the remainder going flat by placing a teaspoon in the neck of the bottle.
Burke's Backyard scientist Graeme Quirk says it doesn't matter if you put a teaspoon in the bottle or not - the champagne will keep its fizz anyway. Champagne is stored for a long time under pressure and this thoroughly wets the inside wall of the bottle, eliminating places where bubbles might form. Left undisturbed in the fridge, a bottle of champagne will still sparkle when poured long after opening: with or without a teaspoon!
