Suzi Q Garden

Suzi Q Garden

Andrew Quixley’s award winning design for his sister Suzi’s garden is adventurous and fun, but also practical. Andrew had to contend with design constraints including restricted space, an ugly wall, views of next door’s Zincalume piping and downpipes, and considerable traffic noise from nearby busy roads.

Design solution

Andrew chose water as his medium. He designed three water features: a wall fountain made from a series of off-cuts of household guttering, a nest of taps coming out of silver coloured downpipes, and an arching fountain that shoots over your head as you come out the back door of the house. One submersible pump feeds all three groupings of water features via a series of swimming pool pipe valves. Andrew has cunningly placed the plastic pipes inside the silver downpipes to create his dramatic effects. When the fountains are turned on, the traffic noise disappears. The problem of the ugly wall was solved by painting it with Murowash ‘Azure Blue’, a colour specially mixed by Murobond. This also added cheeriness to the whole design.

Low-maintenance frivolity

The whole effect is one of lightness and fun, which is very important in a garden. It is low-maintenance, yet it’s neither an expensive construction nor is it beyond the capabilities of the average home handy-person. This design recently won the ‘Residential Design and Construction under $20,000’ category of the Landscape Association of South Australia.
