The Conservatory Nursery
Yates and Garden Centres of Australia conduct a competition each year to find the best garden centres in the land. For the second year running, first prize in the medium-sized garden centre category has gone to The Conservatory, a nursery in the Adelaide suburb of Unley. Don visited The Conservatory to meet Jeffrey Bowden, the owner, and congratulate him on his success.
Not just a nursery, but a lifestyle
Jeffrey caters for customers who come in seeking ideas and inspiration, not just to buy a particular plant or item. People are tending to downsize and they’re treating sections of the garden more intimately; at the same time they lead busy lives and so they want low maintenance gardens. Nursery staff are trained to help customers with easy planting options, ideas on the best ways to use plants, how to team plants with appropriate pots and accessories, and how to maintain gardens in difficult Adelaide soils and conditions. Jeffrey is also following the direction that garden centres have taken in Europe, and selling ‘lifestyle’ items such as furniture, prints and cushions.
