Years ago if you wanted to improve the look of your property you went to the local nursery. Those nurseries had a wonderful range of plants, but they were fairly unimaginative places. The very latest shopping development is the lifestyle centre, where you can buy plants and everything else you need for the house and garden. Burke’s Backyard visited the Evergreen Lifestyle Centre, a unique shopping complex developed only 18 months ago at Surfers Paradise. All the shops open onto a central courtyard sheltered by a Balinese style pavilion with authentic ‘alang alang’ thatched roofs. Shopping is done in a relaxed, tropical atmosphere surrounded by colourful gardens, swaying palms, brightly painted walls, sculptures and water features.

The centre has something for everyone. As well as plants, the Evergreen Garden Centre has a wide range of giftware, stone fountains, imported statues and sculptures for the garden. At Marrakech there’s an assortment of home furnishings, fine linens and leisure wear, while at Silk Road you’ll find antique furniture and collectables from India, Burma and Thailand. Country Floors stocks a large range of hand made ceramic wall and floor tiles. There’s also an art gallery, gourmet deli, book shop and licensed restaurant.
