Junk Collector

Kotton Patterson makes original pieces from recycled materials. He is the owner and manager of Thunderbird Construction and Procurement, a junkyard at the bottom of Johnston Street in Annandale, Sydney. The yard is an amazing mix of marine parts – ropes, lashings, anchors, boat shells, lanterns, tide gauges and wharf posts. Non-marine items include old irons, chainsaws, statues and a disco ball. Everything is for sale, and the price of each item is determined by how much Kotton likes it, how much he likes you, and what you’re going to do with it. "I don’t want people coming here and buying my shit and go build something I never see," he says, "I want them to get me to build it and I want to build unique things for unique people".

Kotton was born in Oklahoma in the USA, and has a southern drawl to boot. He is an easy going, somewhat eccentric character who sports gold painted fingernails, and is very much into doing his own thing. Kotton says that he doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what he is: "All I do is, I just find shit and stack it how I like it".
