Everybody wants the perfect lawn which looks as good as a bowling green without all the hard work. An old favourite is Kikuyu lawn, a runner grass which is vigorous and easy to grow.

Advantages:

tolerant of heavy wear and traffic
vigorous and easy to grow

Disadvantages:

requires mowing once a week through summer
may send runners into your garden and these will need to be trimmed off

Care and maintenance:

full sun
fertilise in spring with a slow release fertiliser such as Munn’s Green Up which releases fertiliser over three to six months
fertilise again at the end of summer with Dynamic Lifter Greenkeeper’s Choice.

Price and availability

Kikuyu lawn is available from good lawn suppliers all year round. It costs between $1.60 to $4.40 per square metre depending on quantity and delivery cost.
Munn’s Green Up is available nationally from good garden centres, nurseries and hardwares. Prices: 2.5kg costs $8.95, 5kg costs $13.95, 10kg costs $24.50 and 20kg costs $45.
