Listen to your Plants
In recent years there has been much said about talking to your plants, despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting the idea. However, there is good scientific evidence that listening to your plants does help enormously. Of course when you listen to your plants you do it with your eyes.
Things to listen for
These are all signs that plants need watering:
- Drooping leaves and stems indicate an urgent need for water.
- Potting mix that has shrunk away from the edge of a pot says watering is needed. Water for about 10 minutes (or soak the pot in a bucket of water) to thoroughly wet the mix.
- Leaf curl is also another sign of a thirsty plant as the leaves curl as a measure to conserve moisture in the plant.
- Dropping fruit and flowers can mean not enough water.
- Burnt brown edges on leaves is another call for help due to lack of water.
- Sawdust in and around trees can also indicate that a tree needs watering. The sawdust is produced by borers which attack trees that are stressed perhaps due to drought.
