Don looked at a contemporary Balinese-style house and garden designed to work beautifully with the warm, Queensland climate. Architect Paul Clout has opened up parts of the house to take advantage of the fabulous water views and also to blur the distinction between inside and outside living areas.

Features of the house
The large, timber and glass front door opens wide, giving an immediate feeling of spaciousness. Next to the entrance, water cascades over a copper lily fountain with a backdrop of Hebel-framed vertical mirrors. A semi-enclosed courtyard takes advantage of the water views on both sides, and also the cooling summer breezes. This area has a very open, pavilion-like feel, combining the best of both indoor and outdoor living.

Tropical garden
The view is framed by the tropical-style garden, which is filled with sago palms (Cycas revoluta) in chocolate brown pots, frangipani (Plumeria rubra var. acutifolia) and elephant’s ears (Alocasia macrorrhiza). Interesting foliage plants such as cordylines (Cordyline fruticosa) add colour to the garden all year round. Hand-shaped seats carved out of hibiscus wood also double as lights on the steps leading down to a small jetty.
