Nordic Walking Poles
Walking is a very good form of exercise. However, for people with knee or back problems walking can be a painful experience. According to fitness expert, Dr Garry Egger, the Scandinavians have come up with a simple solution to the problem. They have adapted the poles they use for cross-country skiing in winter for use as walking poles in summer. The poles provide support for the back and knees, and help the walker to exercise more efficiently. In fact, research at the Cooper Institute in the United States has shown that walkers using poles burn roughly 20% more energy than walkers without poles do, because poles bring the upper body into the action.
The poles collapse for easy storage and transportation, and there are even models available with shock absorbers to help cushion the impact of exercise on the shoulders.

Nordic Walking Poles cost from around $50 each ($100 a set) at camping and outdoor stores.
