Hi Don
earlier this year I had the amazing privilege of spending 6 weeks in North East Arnhem land. I also visited Gapuwiyak and met, amongst other people Shirley and Scott at the school there
I’ve seen you youtube clip of your visit there and am writing to ask how I can see the video that won them the prize.
Many thanks
Peter
Answer: Hi Peter, You make a good point. We should have it on our YouTube channel – give us a few days and we will get it up. Gapuwiyak is a shining beacon in showing what aboriginal people are capable of doing. Their video is a superb example of their ancient artistic skills combined with their modern education. I detest the usually negative way aboriginal Australians are shown in the media. It is interesting to note that Arnhem land is the purest form of the Apartheid system – in this ONE case it is working very well indeed. Perhaps there are lessons here: The Gapuwiyak kids graduate from school with an excellent HSC level education PLUS their own native language, customs and traditions. It CAN be done.
