I have been given a Golden Ash tree, transplanted from a friend who doesn’t have the space for it.

I know the tree grows quite large, and although I love the look of it, I have to leave space for our fruit trees. We have the elm planted in a temporary pot at present, and it has sprouted its summer growth. What I’m wondering is if it’s possible to permanently grow the elm in a large pot? Or does it definitely have to be planted in ground? How much space do I need to allow for its full growth in ground? I am happy to create a “dwarf” version in a pot.

Thanks

Answer:  Hi Sarah,

You can keep a Golden Elm in a pot for 20 years or more. Get a pot no less than a wine cask in size, some premium quality potting mix and fertilise each Spring.   Don
