Winter Propogation

You may think that you can’t strike cuttings in winter, but this is incorrect.

Some cuttings are BEST struck in winter, such as:

Frangipanis, hydrangeas, roses, grapes and wisteria. Note that they are all deciduous plants.

Get some manuka honey and dip the base of the cuttings into it.  Cuttings should be about 15-20cm long (6-8”).

Put 10-20 cuttings into potting mix in a 20cm diameter pot and water well.  Place in a semi-shaded area until new growth appears, after which put them into the sun.

You may chose to put the pot and cuttings into a large clear plastic bag while they grow, but this is not essential.

With frangipanis, cut lengths of stem about 30-50 cm long (i.e. 1 to 2 feet) and leave them to dry out in a shady area on the ground.  After 2-3 weeks pot them up into a sandy potting mix and water sparingly until the new growth comes in October/November.

Then enjoy all of your new FREE plants.
