Don’s Tips: Old Husbands’ Tales # 3 – Topdressing Lawns

Topdressing Lawns

More old husband’s tales and furphies today.

You must top dress your lawn every year.

This is what people used to do religiously. Well it is not a good thing to do.

Most top dressing soils are alluvial silts that quickly compact and don’t permit water to enter the ground. Thus they prevent the grass from getting enough water during dry periods.

If your lawn has low spots in it, cut underneath the grass, fold it back, add soil below the grass then fold it into its original position.

Fertilise in spring with lawn food and aerate the lawn with a rented power aerator if the soil is hard underneath.

Listen in for our next myth.

Hooroo! Don.
