Broken Crocks In Pots

Today we’re looking at more Old Husband’s Tales. We all know that putting bits of broken crocks or stones in the bottom of the pot improves drainage don’t we?

Well, this is nonsense.

Adding stones or broken crocks to the bottom of the pot actually harms your plants. The broken crocks do not help the drainage at all, but they do reduce the amount of potting mix in the pot. This leads to poorer growth on the plant.

Another furphy is that shallow pots drain better than tall pots. The truth is the reverse.  Taller pots contain a lower percentage of water than squat pots.

Always buy a premium quality potting mix, add 50% coarse sand and use a wetting agent every 6 months.

Now your plants will really crank along.

More Old Husband’s Tales next time.

Hooroo! Don.
