Don’s Tips: Laying New Turf

Laying New Turf

November is the best month of the year to lay new lawn turf. You can get couch grass, buffalo grass and many others.

In my opinion, the soft leaf buffalo lawns are the best choice: I say this because they do well in both full sun and semi-shaded areas.

In my testing, Sir Walter buffalo grass has the best shade tolerance of all. It stays quite green in winter, is reasonably drought tolerant and it tolerates spraying with selective weed-killer sprays as well. These are the ones that kill weeds in lawn without killing the lawns

Sapphire has also had some excellent results for shade tolerance when tested by the Dept of Primary Industries.

Make sure that you prepare the area well before laying turf. Get some coarse sand and mix in a little soil to allow it to firm up. Use a device called a level lawn to get the surface very flat, but with a one in a hundred. That’s a 10cm fall in 10 metre slope for drainage.

Now lay the turf and water it obsessively every day for at least 10 days.

– then enjoy your new lawn!

Hooroo!
