Blowing Leaves

Recently a listener asked me if it was legal for her once-a-week gardening person to blow the leaves and clippings onto the street or into the gutter.

It’s illegal to contribute to blocking drains in streets.  This practice also pollutes local waterways and catchment areas.

Sensible and responsible people use blowers to blow leaves underneath the garden shrubs nearby.  This creates useful mulch that improves the soil.  You can also blow leaves onto the lawn before you mow it.

Then, as you mow the lawn, the mower will vacuum up the leaves as it goes.  When you mix dry leaves with the grass clippings you get a wonderful compost mixture.

And you don’t have to collect any of the leaves – the mower does it for you.

Please be responsible with garden blowers.  They are very useful machines but you need to use them sensibly.

Hooroo!
