Napoleon’s Favourite Aphrodisiac: The French Alternative

Poor Josephine! At the end of the day, her thoughts and attentions turned to husband, Napoleon, but alas, with his ideas far from matching her lustful thoughts “not tonight, Josephine” may have been a common cry.

Josephine soon began to lament the loss of her nighttime activities, so sex- starved Josephine arranged for Napoleon to be served a chocolate and lavender concoction which soon became his favourite nighttime tipple. Jackie French shows us how to make Napoleon’s chocolaty aphrodisiac, which she says is a good way to end a rich meal (but use a small cup).

To make this drink you’ll need:

  • Coffee plunger or teapot
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 scoop of coffee (Jackie used drip filter coffee)
  • 3 scoops of dried or fresh lavender flowers (Jackie used fresh lavender which gives a stronger flavour)
  • 1 cup hot drinking chocolate

Method:

Place the coffee and lavender flowers in a coffee plunger or bowl and add the boiling water. Let the mixture steep for a few minutes then plunge or strain away the lavender. Add 1 cup of hot drinking chocolate and sweeten to taste. Drink while hot and enjoy Napoleon’s favourite aphrodisiac.

Note: English lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) is the only lavender recommended for culinary uses. Other lavenders may have a bitter flavour. Do not use it if it has been recently treated with any garden chemicals.
