Don’s Landscaping Tips: Window View

Windows are essential in houses to let in light and fresh air. But a problem that is common to old and new houses is when a window looks straight out onto a fence or straight onto the neighbour’s house. What do you do to brighten up the view when there’s less than 1m (3′) between the window and the next door neighbour’s boundary wall? If there’s no wall erect a decent fence, something solid that can be painted. A focal point can be created by putting up a large object that will be a feature of the window view. You could erect a wall fountain or hang objects such as sandstone cherubs or other reconstituted sandstone wall objects. Establish a small garden at the base of the wall or fence that will survive in the shaded area. Simple plants like nandina and hebes will work well.

Cost

The Cherub fountain, including the pump, cost $700 and is available from Menduni, Garden Artistry, Vineyard, NSW, 2765. Phone: (02) 9838 1645.
