Russian Blue Cat

Breed: Russian Blue
Temperament: placid, adaptable, playful
Maintenance: low
Lifespan: 13-15 years
Cost: $400+
Recommended for: anyone

History

The Russian Blue was also known as the Archangel Cat because it was believed to have been first seen in the Russian port of Archangel. It is thought these cats were transported throughout Europe by sailors on ships but this has never been proven. However as cats with similar colour are found in Scandinavia, it is possible the breed did originate somewhere in Russia. Any Russian Blue cats that may have existed before WWII were virtually lost during the war. The breed was then revived using British Blues and even Siamese colourpoint crossbreeds. Today the Russian Blue is very popular around the world.

Appearance

Despite its similarity to the British Blue and the Korat, the Russian Blue has quite a different coat in both colour and texture. The fur is short and plush with a double coat. Unique in feel, this double coat is described by many breeders as the defining feature of the breed. Its colour is even blue-grey with a silvery sheen. Although the green eyes are also considered a basic characteristic of the Russian Blue today, this feature was not added to the standard until 1933. The cats are medium to large-sized and many owners say they exude elegance as they move. Recent developments in the breed have included white and black forms known as Russian Whites and Russian Blacks. These are still rare.

Temperament

Described by many as a dignified breed the Russian Blue is slightly reserved and somewhat cautious. Russian Blues are not known to enjoy noisy households or lots of activity, however they do like to play. Russian Blues are known for their compatibility with other pets, but they will usually form a bond with one particular person. The breed also has a reputation as one of the less destructive cats. Owners have found that Russian Blues will tolerate children as well as dogs and other animals, making them great for families.

Maintenance

The Russian Blue is a very low maintenance cat and requires no special care or diet. Owners even say that the less the cats are brushed the more radiant the coat becomes.

Health and lifespan

There are very few health problem associated with this breed, although some owners report overeating, especially of dry cat food, which can cause vomiting. Russian Blues will live 13-15 years and beyond.

Cost

A Russian Blue can be bought from $400 upwards.

Recommended for

There are very few situations that will not suit a Russian Blue. Some may find that individual animals will be disturbed by busy, noisy families. The breed is happy to live inside or outside and will also suit apartment life.
