Outdoor Shower

Home Among Gumtrees > Around the House

If you don’t have the money to spend on a fully plumbed, luxury outdoor shower, there is an inexpensive alternative. Tara Dennis showed how easy it is to set up a temporary shower, suitable for a quick rinse off on a hot day.

Getting started

Locate your shower in a quiet part of the garden that already provides screening, for example next to an existing fence or some well-positioned planting. If necessary you can set up some bamboo screens for added privacy. A slightly elevated position is best so that the water drains away.

Shower rig

Tara picked up a portable tripod shower from her local hardware store. It just clips together and plugs into the garden hose. (Tip: for a hot shower, buy an adaptor to connect the hose to your laundry mixer tap.) To avoid getting muddy feet, Tara laid timber decking tiles beneath the shower. These are backed with plastic mesh and they simply click together.

Cost and availability
  • Garden showers cost approx. $20 at hardware stores.
  • Neta plain 15mm tap adaptors cost around $7.50 at hardware stores
  • Decking tiles 300mm sq. cost approx. $10 each at hardware stories and nurseries. Tiles should be placed on compacted road base or a level base
  • Bamboo screen, 840 x 1500mm, costs approx. $235 at hardware stores.
