Home Among Gumtrees > Around the House
Tara Dennis showed how to keep draughts out of the house, keep warm in winter and cut down on fuel bills at the same time. There are several draught excluding products available, as well as the traditional door snake or sausage.
Self adhesive draught excluder
Installing self-adhesive draught excluder around doors and windows will keep out draughts, dust and insects. These 5 metre long, woven polypropylene pile strips are suitable for gaps from 2.5mm to 5mm. Just cut to size, and then stick around the edges of your aluminium casement windows, sash windows and doors.
Automatic door seal
This is a metal strip, which attaches to the bottom of the door. The rubber strip at the front keeps out draughts, dust and insects, and automatically lifts to clear carpets. Fitting automatic door sealers is a bit fiddly, but basically its a matter of measuring the door and cutting the strip to size, attaching the screws provided to the door, popping the screws into the channels on the door seal, and then tightening the screws.
Door snake
A very simple solution to the problem of internal door draughts is the traditional door sausage or snake.
Draught excluders are available at hardware stores. Door snakes are available at department and homeware stores, or make your own. Approximate prices for draught excluders shown in our segment:
Raven – Self Adhesive Draught Excluder: $12
Raven – Aluminium Automatic Door Seal: $23
