Home Among Gumtrees > Around the House
For many years house design in Australia has been predictable, straightforward and frankly ordinary, but in recent times all that has changed. The Burke's Backyard team visited a wonderful house designed by Frank Macchia, an architect from the Noosa region of Queensland. Not only is the architecture world standard, but the use of colours, the general design and the use of plants around the garden is absolutely unforgettable. The hallmark of this beautiful garden is elegant simplicity.
A very distinctive Asian feel has been created by using an ancient Chinese bath as a water feature and surrounding it with gravel, bamboo, mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) and a small water pipe. It's the little things that really add class to this part of the garden and make it work well.
A glorious fountain cascades into one end of a long, narrow pool. The pool is not big in terms of water content, but it's perfect for exercising and swimming laps.
Pots and urns at the back of the house are planted with yucca.
A leopard tree (Caesalpinia ferrea) grows in a sea of mondo grass. Agave is planted in beds of white gravel.
