Viewers’ Letters

What is a sport?

A sport is a term used in horticulture to describe the way some plants grow just one branch or segment which is different from the original plant. Usually the sport has flowers which are differently coloured from those of the original plant. Some sports are recognised and recur and in fact provide the source of many new varieties (for example particularly in azaleas and camellias). Others are seen only once, as in the example of the ‘Pink Cardinal’ rose which produced one flower that was half pink and half red. This occurs due to an error in the cell division of the flower. It is not possible to reproduce the half coloured flower again from a cutting or seed, it is a freak of nature.

Clover

If you have clover growing in your lawns it is not necessary to remove it. Clover is actually a legume which draws nitrogen from the air, fertilising the lawn for free. Clover also has a lovely soft texture and the green colour blends in with the grass. The only disadvantage that clover may bring to your lawn is the chance of being stung by a bee attracted to the flowers.
