Poodle Rescue
Poodles are among the most striking dog breeds with their thick woolly coats, often clipped into a variety of amazing styles. They are also highly intelligent, and make wonderful pets and companion animals. When you consider all that, it’s surprising to learn that in Western Australia an organisation has been set up especially for rescuing neglected, unwanted and abandoned poodles. Denise Davies runs the Poodle Rescue Centre, and as she told Don when he visited recently, even she can’t believe how many dogs are brought in. She has saved over 200 poodles in the past two years.
Hard times
The dogs all have their own stories of abuse and maltreatment – some have been bashed or run over, others are abandoned or neglected. People sometimes surrender their dogs because they don’t want to spend time grooming them, or they just don’t know how to train them.
Rehabilitation and a new home
Denise takes the dogs to a vet, who treats any injuries and makes sure the animals are sound. They stay at the centre until they are well again, and then new homes are found for them. Denise charges $175 for a dog, to cover her costs. She also follows up with the new owners, to make sure that dog and human are compatible.
