On Burke’s Backyard last year we mentioned Peter Valder’s wonderful book Gardens in China, in which Peter describes over 200 Chinese gardens he has visited. They include surviving imperial gardens and those of retired officials, courtyards and gardens of temples, enclosures of ancient burial grounds and imperial tombs, as well as the public parks, botanical gardens and arboreta that have sprung up since 1949. Gardens in China is essential reading for anyone interested in Chinese gardens, garden history and Chinese culture.

This week Don had some great news. Peter’s book has just been awarded the prestigious, American Library Association Choice Award for 2002.
