Colour House
Don visited a house that was so bright and colourful he almost needed to wear sunglasses! The owners, Paul and Helen Dickson, bought their home nine years ago. At that time all the walls were painted a bland, off-white colour. Paul and Helen set about repainting using the vibrant colours that they had seen on a trip to Central and South America. The Burke’s Backyard Mexican program and overseas book also influenced them.
Paul and Helen kept to a fairly traditional look in the front garden to blend with the streetscape. However, every room inside the house is painted in strong colours, and in the back garden colour runs riot. The back exterior walls are painted with Murowash and Pure Acrylic paints from Murobond Coatings. Some of the colours were from their standard range and others were specially mixed to Helen’s requirements.
Most of the artefacts in the courtyard were purchased in Australia from Mexican importers, Jaysun. Paul built the fountain, which features Mexican tiles. At first glance there doesn’t seem to be anywhere to eat, but Paul explained that what looks like a mural on the wall is actually a table. When needed the tabletop is folded down and the legs attached. The cheerful, happy colours in the back garden are offset by a spectacular, red flowering bougainvillea hybrid.
