Grevillea ‘Sunset Bronze’

Don looked at a fascinating new grevillea hybrid of unknown parentage. Grevillea ‘Sunset Bronze’ was a chance seedling found in a Brisbane garden and is thought to be a cross with G. ‘Honey Gem’. It was first propagated by grevillea enthusiast Merv Hodge, and later introduced to the nursery industry by Nielsen’s Native Nursery in Brisbane.

Plant details

Common name: ‘Sunset Bronze’

Botanic name: Grevillea ‘Sunset Bronze’

Description:

A tropical grevillea hybrid growing to about 3m (10′) tall and 2m (6′) wide. The flowers, which are a burnt orange-red colour, are produced for most of the year, but peak flowering time is through spring, summer and early autumn.

Best climate:

‘Sunset Bronze’ is still a relatively new plant that has not been trialled in all areas. As a tropical grevillea hybrid it is sensitive to heavy frost and cold temperatures but will grow well in most northern and coastal areas. It needs frost protection in cold parts of Australia and extra water in inland zones.

Good points:

attractive burnt orange/red flowers – an unusual and highly desirable colour in grevilleas long flowering bird attracting

Downside:

This is a new grevillea, which is not widely available as yet.

Costs:

$7.25 to $15 for plants in 140mm (6″) pots depending on where they are sold.
