Don’s Tips: Gouldian Finches

Gouldian Finch

Many people regard the Australian Native Gouldian Finch as the most spectacularly coloured finch in the world.

They are endangered in the wild in Australia, but they are becoming very popular in captivity.

Last century they were trapped in vast numbers and exported around the world.  Farmers burnt the trees and grasses that the gouldian finch needed for survival.  This all nearly wiped them out.

But you can go to bird shops and buy one or two pairs and put them into an aviary to breed.  They breed like rabbits and they are particularly friendly and fun to be with.

They have a purple chest, a yellow tummy, a green back surrounded by black lines.  Gouldian finches come in 3 colours: red, or black or a golden yellow.

Gouldian finches also do well as cage birds.  They really love their life with people away from hawks, snakes and fires.

Think about a gouldian finch or two at your place.
