Chooks & Eggs

What chooks lay eggs and when do they lay?

Well crossbred black Australorps, crossbred white leghorns and Isa Browns are the main commercial layers. They lay around 300 eggs per year and we recommend the crossbred Australorps as the best of all for home gardens.

Purebred poultry like silkies or hamburgs lay between 30 and 100 eggs per year. But it varies a lot.

Commercial layers only lay well for about 18 months but purebreds will lay well for about 5 years or more.

Most chickens stop laying in winter while they moult their feathers.

So, of the commercial laying chooks we recommend the black ones first, then the white ones second and the red ones a distant third. The red ones (Isa Browns) can be problematic and are better for commercial chook farms.
