Don’s Tips: Winter Pruning

Peach pruning

Winter Pruning

Winter is the traditional time to prune most deciduous trees. It’s done in winter mostly because it’s easier to see what you are doing after the leaves have dropped.

Most fruit trees are pruned so that the tree height is reduced to make picking easier and safer.

So prune fruiting deciduous trees like peaches, nectarines, apples etc. to around 2-3 metres tall in July or August. Prune roses to knee high.

Spring flowering, deciduous trees like flowering peaches or cherries are pruned AFTER flowering in September or October. This way you are not pruning off all the flowers before they open.

In the home garden, there’s no need to prune a special way. Just get stuck into it and near enough is good enough.
