Don’s Tips: Fruits That Split

Fruits That Split

We get many emails about fruit that split open – from oranges and lemons to tomatoes.

The cause is almost always due to erratic watering. If you let the soil around fruiting plants dry out, when it rains or when you water it really well, the fruit will rapidly engorge and split open.

The cause is simply overly rapid growth. The same thing happens with gum trees that split open vertically up and down the bark. Too much water too quickly.

Water your tomatoes and citrus and other fruiting plants for about 30-45 minutes once a week with a sprinkler – then the fruit should never split open.

The vertical splits in the bark of gum trees usually do no harm – even if they look nasty.

Hooroo! Don.
