Most women believe that wearing black makes you look slim, and Burke’s Backyard resident scientist, Graeme Quirk, agrees. In our segment Graeme explained the science behind the theory.
If you wear black trousers your bottom will look smaller, at least if viewed from behind and not in profile. This is because it is hard to see shadows and patterns on uniformly dark material. So when you wear black your bottom will look flat and maybe smaller than it really is, rather than appearing three-dimensional. However, when you wear light coloured trousers the shadows and patterns are easier to see, therefore your bottom will look fuller.
Graeme’s tip is to wear lighter clothing on the round bits that you’d like to show off, and dark clothing on the bits you’d like to minimise.
