Elefantus

Elefantus was formed over three years ago when glass artist Fraser McCulloch went into partnership with a Cairns blacksmith. Fraser brought his design flair and glass slumping skills to the business. (Slumping is the controlled bending or downward sinking of single or multiple layers of glass while they are being heated.) Fraser gave Don a guided tour of the showroom where examples of handmade forged iron and glass fixtures, fittings, lighting, fencing, glass products and signage are on display. All the pieces are made in the adjoining workshop, which is fitted out with a forge, drop spring hammers, lathes, a hydraulic press and glass kilns. Seeing all the old fashioned machinery working is quite a spectacle for visitors, and it can be quite frightening! Even Fraser thinks so: “Oh I was very daunted by the whole thing when I first came across it but you just have to get in there and go for it.”

Balustrading and pool fencing are the bread and butter of Elefantus, and most of their work is custom designed and manufactured for clients. Fraser showed Don a range of wall lights made of kiln formed or slump glass. These fittings are simple and chunky, and look great with the Tuscan, Santa Fe and Moroccan styles which are in vogue at the moment. Fraser enjoys making every piece slightly different – “I think that’s the big appeal really… every piece being individual. Every job is a challenge and we really try to make these as good as we can for the client.”
