Rippongi Hills is a major urban development incorporating modern architecture with pre-existing traditional features. Opened in April 2003, it is located on a 28-acre site and includes the Mori Tower, the Asahi Broadcasting Center, hotels, cinema complex, residential towers and more than 200 retail shops.
Don took the lift to the 54th floor of the Mori Tower for a bird’s eye view of Tokyo. He saw Mount Fuji, modern bridges and incredible skyscrapers; he also spotted old cemetries, Japanese gardens and Buddhist temples. Modern Japan incorporates the best of the old and the best of the new. It is a fairly small country compared to Australia, with the landmass just a little bigger than Victoria. However, Japan has a population of 127 million, compared with only 19.5 million in Australia.
After visiting the tower, Don walked through the Harajuku area. He was surprised to see the individuality and flair of many passers-by, in a society known for it’s uniformity.
