Mouldy Market Umbrellas

A great addition to the backyard, particularly for summer, is a large shade umbrella (also known as a market umbrella). These large umbrellas provide protection from the sun and create an outdoor entertaining area.

Replacing old umbrellas

A major problem with these stylish umbrellas is that they are made from canvas. After about five years they can start to look a bit worn, go mouldy and tear away from the frame. The timber or metal frame generally outlives the cover. Canvas, which is essentially cotton, does not last for much longer than five years. So what do you do? One option is to purchase a brand new umbrella. Prices range from $300 up to $1385 for the top of the range. Prices vary depending on the size, shape and fabric used.

Alternatively, if the timber or metal frame is in good working order, buy a replacement cover for your umbrella. There are two materials available: a poly-cotton cover which is guaranteed for two years; o
an acrylic cover which is guaranteed for five years.

The acrylic fabric is not as susceptible to mould as a cotton fabric, which makes it longer lasting, and it comes in a wider variety of colours.

Prices for new covers range from $242 to $418 for a poly-cotton and from $388 to $710 for an acrylic cover, depending on the size and shape of the cover. Fitting the new covers can be done yourself with a do-it-yourself kit or for an extra charge of about $50 (not including pick up and delivery) the cover will be fitted for you.

Care

For cleaning either the poly-cotton or acrylic covers, tip the umbrella on its side and wash with garden hose and a brush.

Further information

Market umbrellas and replacement covers are available from many stores throughout Australia including Cotswold Furniture Collection. There is a mail-order service for replacement covers. Phone: 1800 677 047.

The umbrella shown in our segment was an octagonal acrylic 12' (3.6m) from Cotswold Furniture. The replacement cover for this cost around $600.
