In the Garden > Flowering Plants & Shrubs
The pincushion hakea (Hakea laurina) is native to Western Australia. It grows to around 6m (20’) tall, and has globular red flower heads with protruding, creamy-white styles. Like many Western Australian species, it is very difficult to grow in the humid eastern states.
The good news is that a new dwarf form of the pincushion hakea has been developed. It is grafted onto Hakia salicifolia rootstock and forms a very dense shrub, which only grows to about 1m (3’) tall.
Dwarf Pincushion Hakea (Hakea laurina dwarf) is very hard to find at the moment. However, in 2-3 years it should be readily available throughout Australia.
