Rope Planter

Share

Don showed how to transform a cheap, plastic pot into a stylish indoor planter.

You will need

  • plastic pot
  • 8mm rope
  • hot glue gun
  • Stanley knife

Instructions

  1. Trim frayed ends on the rope.
Apply a dab of glue to the bottom of the pot, and then attach one end of the rope.
  2. Wait for the glue to harden to make sure the rope is attached securely before you start to coil.
  3. Hot glue the rope in a coiled fashion around the pot, working from bottom to top.
For the last lap, glue the rope along the top of the pot, and then taper the rope with a Stanley knife.
  4. Put plenty of glue on the end so that the rope doesn’t fray. (Tip: you will need around 15 metres of rope to cover a 220mm pot.)

Finishing touches

Don potted up a colourful calathea in the new rope planter. Members of the arrowroot family, calatheas are usually grown for their attractive foliage. Don chose Calathea rufibarba, an upright plant with long, crinkly leaves. The underside of the foliage and the stems are red/purple in colour and covered with tiny hairs. Calatheas prefer a warm location, away from cold drafts.
