Don visited a property situated in a remnant cabbage tree forest on Sydney’s northern beaches. Although the house and garden design could be described as modern Australian, it has a wonderful open feel reminiscent of an Asian or Balinese pavilion. Folding cedar and glass doors open right up on three sides, creating a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor living areas. A beautiful water feature with a fountain winds its way through the garden. The pond is crossed by bridges, and is home to large Koi carp almost half a metre long. Lush understorey plants thrive under a canopy of cabbage tree palms. The palms are Australian natives, but fit in perfectly with the exotic Balinese theme of the garden.
This is Australia’s southernmost palm, with a range extending from Fraser Island in Queensland to Victoria. It grows to about 30m (100′) tall and has a ringed, grey trunk and a dense crown of glossy green leaves with spiny stalks. It is a hardy garden plant which grows best planted in rich soil in a semi-shaded position. It is also a popular pot or tub plant for a brightly lit room or a sheltered patio.
This Sydney garden will be open on the weekend of October 27-28 for Australia’s Open Garden Scheme. For details ring the AOGS Information Line on 1902 261 026 closer to the opening.
